Forecasters have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected over large parts of the UK. Celebrants have been told to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Plans Go Ahead Despite Warnings

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay festivities are set to proceed, unlike last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," stated the weather service.

Displays Under Open but Cold Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks displays, with dry conditions and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be low, so extra layers essential, according to forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.

Readings Expected to Drop Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Alerts Activated

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this signified the weather was expected to lead to notable consequences across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
