KPop Demon Hunters: Inspired by the Impulse to Let Female Characters Be Silly On-Screen
It would be the understatement of the year to say that KPop Demon Hunters has taken the world by storm. Audiences cite various reasons for its immense success, including its infectious songs, a bustling fandom that produces its own choreography and covers, and a truly eye-watering amount of fanfiction.
From a female perspective, one of the favorite elements of KPop Demon Hunters is the bond between the group's members Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. Despite the odds, they unite to defeat demons and restore the Honmoon. While there is an ill-fated romance between Rumi and Jinu from Saja Boys, it never overshadows the heartwarming friendship among the three girls. They are boisterous, confident and aren't afraid to look a little goofy.
The Intentional Silliness of Huntr/x
As revealed by the director and writer, the humorous nature of Huntr/x was intentional. Speaking at a recent press conference alongside the cast and co-creator Chris Appelhans, Kang was asked about the key elements she wanted women of all generations to see in the series.
"My primary goal is I wanted to see really silly women," Kang stated. "In my experience, we're often hesitant, particularly in animated works, to show female characters act foolishly and become the most humorous character."
She shared a personal anecdote from working on films where an ensemble cast included one girl character. Creators faced difficulties in lengthy meetings about how to make her unique. Kang suggested making the most comedic role female, but the idea was often dismissed.
Strength In Comedy
She confessed that this frustration over the unwillingness to portray silly women directly influenced the creation of KPop Demon Hunters. She was set to make all three Huntr/x members humorous.
"I really think there's empowerment and strength in comedy," Kang said. "Being funny requires bravery. To propose gags. To act goofy around others. And when you discover friends that embrace you and your weirdest side, and join in your oddness, that is an ideal bond. I really wanted to showcase that type of friendship between women."
This approach paid off: The series is filled with wacky moments, often conveyed through the animation style. Examples include the three girls chugging ramen with exaggerated expressions and tumbling around when encountering the handsome Saja Boys. These comedic elements make the characters unforgettable and are clearly a key reason why fans are deeply engaged and eagerly anticipating a follow-up project.
