Democrats Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials expressed fury after the ex-president accused a group of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and stated they should be detained and punished "by death" following their publication of a disputed video.

The Recording That Sparked the Dispute

The clip, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who formerly worked in defense or security roles.

"Like us, you all made an pledge to defend and support this national charter," the lawmakers affirmed in the short video. "Currently, the dangers to our democratic foundation are not only from overseas, but from within our own country. Our statutes are clear, you can reject illegal orders, you can decline unlawful commands, you should refuse improper directives. No one has to carry out orders that violate the law or our founding principles."

Trump's Incensed Response

The video message seemed to trigger a heated reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.

On Thursday morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional message, he stated: "This represents really concerning, and Harmful to our Country. Their comments cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Officials React

Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader issued a unified declaration condemning the remarks.

"Political violence has no place in America," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all worked our United States with great national pride and distinction. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and risky death threats against members of Congress, and urge Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."

The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to make certain the security of these officials and their families."

"Donald Trump must right away take down these extreme social media posts and retract his violent language before he leads to violence," the announcement stated.

Officials' Defiant Reaction

The officials who appeared in the video also released a declaration.

"We serve as former service members and defense specialists who value this country and swore an vow to protect and defend the founding document of the United States," they said. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to keep it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will stop us from that sacred obligation."

"What's most telling is that the former president deems it punishable by capital punishment for us to repeat the statutes," they continued. "Our service members should understand that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."

They stated: "The entire nation must come together and censure the ex-president's demands for our execution and political violence. This is a time for principled stance."

Additional Political Comments

The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's comments and shared on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of government members."

He added: "This represents an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This constitutes very risky, you have important representatives of Congress telling troops to defy commands, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."

The GOP official also allegedly told journalists that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the violation of sedition" but that "lawyers have to examine the wording and decide all that."

White House Response

During a White House press conference on later that day, when asked by a reporter, "Does the president want to execute elected officials?", the executive branch representative answered: "No."

"It's important to note about what the former president is responding to," the representative said. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who conspired to organize a recorded statement to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She stated: "The purity of our defense system rests on the chain of command, and if that structure is violated, it can cause people getting killed, it can lead to chaos, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are basically promoting."
